The Kind Rebellion on What Am I Modeling? with Dr Tricia Pingel
A conversation about kindness, courage, reinvention and what our behaviour teaches the people around us.
I’m delighted to share a conversation that has been several months in the making. I recently joined Dr Tricia Pingel on her podcast, What Am I Modeling?, for an hour-long episode about kindness, resilience and what it takes to remain human when life, work and leadership become difficult.
Tricia’s podcast is built around a deceptively simple question: what are we modelling through the way we live?
That question has a natural kinship with The Kind Rebellion. Kindness isn’t something we demonstrate only when circumstances are easy or other people are behaving well. Its real character becomes visible under pressure, in the choices we make when we’re hurt, challenged or uncertain.
Our conversation follows my journey from more than two decades in policing to becoming a writer, speaker and advocate for a more courageous and practical understanding of kindness. We explore adversity and reinvention, empathy and self-care, the importance of protecting ourselves in online spaces, and the everyday choices that help kindness remain possible when life gives us good reason to become harder.
At the centre of the conversation is a tension I’ve lived and continue to explore: how do we remain open and humane without leaving ourselves unprotected, and how do we become strong without becoming hard?
Kindness, as I understand it, is not passive, pleasant or endlessly accommodating. It can include boundaries, truth, accountability and the courage to begin again. It doesn’t require us to deny what has happened or allow people to harm us. It asks us to choose carefully what we will carry forward and what we will model for others as we do ❤️
I’m grateful to Tricia for the warmth, care and curiosity she brought to our conversation, and for giving these ideas room to unfold honestly.
